چکیده

Abstract. Ammonia (NH3) emissions have large impacts on air quality and nitrogen deposition, influencing human health the well-being of sensitive ecosystems. Large uncertainties exist in “bottom-up” NH3 emission inventories due to limited source information a historical lack measurements, hindering assessment NH3-related environmental impacts. The increasing capability satellites measure abundance development modeling tools enable us better constrain estimates at high spatial resolution. In this study, we from widely used 2011 National Emissions Inventory (2011 NEI) US using Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer column density measurements (IASI-NH3) gridded 36 km by horizontal With hybrid inverse approach, use Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) its multiphase adjoint model optimize April, July, October. Towards validation of ammonia (NH3) measurements from the IASI satellite

Limited availability of ammonia (NH3) observations is currently a barrier for effective monitoring of the nitrogen cycle. It prevents a full understanding of the atmospheric processes in which this trace gas is involved and therefore impedes determining its related budgets. Since the end of 2007, the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) satellite has been observing NH3 from space...

The adjoint of CMAQ.

An adjoint model for the internationally used Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling platform of the U.S. EPA is developed. The adjoint version for CMAQ (CMAQ-ADJ) provides the user community with forward (decoupled direct method or DDM) and backward (adjoint) sensitivity analysis capabilities. Current implementation is for gas-phase processes. Discrete adjoints are implemented for al...

High-resolution inversion of OMI formaldehyde columns to quantify isoprene emission on ecosystem-relevant scales: application to the Southeast US

Isoprene emissions from vegetation have a large effect on atmospheric chemistry and air quality. ‘Bottom-up’ 25 isoprene emission inventories used in atmospheric models are based on limited vegetation information and uncertain land cover data, leading to potentially large errors. Satellite observations of atmospheric formaldehyde (HCHO), a high-yield product of isoprene oxidation, provide ‘top-...

Inversion of CO and NO x emissions using the adjoint of the IMAGES model

We use ground-based observations of CO mixing ratios and vertical column abundances together with tropo-spheric NO 2 columns from the GOME satellite instrument as constraints for improving the global annual emission estimates of CO and NO x for the year 1997. The agreement between concentrations calculated by the global 3-dimensional CTM IMAGES and the observations is optimized using the adjoin...
